Why did Netanyahu bring up biblical prophecies in his last speech on the ongoing war? Essentially the whole claim of the zionists to what they call the "Land of Israel" is founded on Biblical texts and genocidal in nature. The region of today's Palestine, Syria and Lebanon, was historically called Canaan. Palestine was a part of Canaan. The name Palestine was given by the Romans to South Canaan.
Canaanites are the indigenous population and are the ancestors of today's Palestinians, Lebanese and Syrians. Scientific evidence of this is conclusive¹ . Culturally, the reference to Canaan remains present in our Levantine culture and even Canaan as a family name is very common among Palestinians, Lebanese and Syrians today. In contrast, the Hebrews, as depicted in the Bible, did not originate in Canaan and entered Canaan, the very first time, under Joshua's leadership, as invaders. The Bible is very clear about this and documents the story of this invasion and the genocide inflicted upon the Canaanites. In Deuteronomy, the Bible reads: "When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant... When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations... then you must destroy them totally. Make no treaty with them, and show them no mercy." Additionally, setting aside biblical accounts, many of today's Jews don't have direct lineage to the ancient Hebrews and less so to the Canaanites (only Sephardi Jews do to a certain extent). A significant portion (most Ashkenazi Jews) are descendants of European converts to Judaism. The Zionist movement was founded by European Jews. And yet, they claim to be the owners of the land according to the Bible. While the Bible clearly states that the land is Canaan, that they are strangers to it before their first arrival, let alone the second. The Zionists, who invaded Palestine in 1947, legitimized their ethnic cleansing partly by prophecies and the biblical promise mentioned above. Settlers keep using these arguments every day to justify the theft of Palestinian land. The use by Netanyahu of such a narrative, and his reference to biblical prophecies can only be understood as justification for crimes of genocide. Invading the land and killing or subjugating its people based on a religious ideology, preaching superiority and "God's chosen people and God's promise to take someone's land, and genocide committed by the "Children of the light" the Hebrews against the Canaanites who are "Children of darkness". 1 see for instance this study: https://www.science.org/content/article/ancient-dna-reveals-fate-mysterious-canaanites
